Background: Z. jujuba (Lam.), an important edible fruit of India and world had a long history of traditional uses along with several medicinal, and nutritional properties, the fruit are the most utilized part, although seeds are discarded as waste & less explored. Thus, study includes phytochemical analysis of the seeds and development of chemical markers for quality control and exploring its utilization prospects in pharmaceutical & nutritional formulations.
Results: Zizyphus seeds were characterized and authenticated through botanical, physico-chemical and phytochemical studies. Range of standards were established for quality assessment & assurance. Total ash, moisture content and swelling index varied from 3.29%, 5.75% and 1.5 mg/ ml respectively. 97.5% of hexane, alcohol and water extract were extractable showing presence of triterpenoids, sterols, anthraquinones, alkaloids, saponins and carbohydrates as major phytochemicals. Thin layer chromatography study revealed that a characteristics marker at Rf value 0.41was found to be common, whereas other differentiating markers were obtained at Rf values 0.84, 0.76, 0.22, 0.17 and 0.90, 0.88, 0.34 respectively and a marker for alkaloid was observed at Rf value 0.23.
Conclusion: Study thus, prospects the utilization of seeds & identified markers in pharmaceutical and nutritional formulations for natural products.
