Abstract: Barleria prionitis L. (Kala-bansa) is well known Indian traditional medicinal plant used in the treatment of various ailments. Numerous ethno-pharmacological and scientific studies have been mentioned in the literature to support its traditional potential. The plant is rich in balarenone, pipataline, prionisides, barlerinoside, verbascoside, shanzhiside methyl ester, barlerin, acetylbarlerin, lupulinoside and scutellarein. The review emphasizes primarily on ethno-botany, folkloric uses, pharmacological activities of the extracts and isolated phytoconstituents with their possible mechanism and safety profile of Barleria prionitis to provide a comprehensive data for helping the researchers to find out new chemical entity.
