Kinetics of oxidation of diols (glycerol and 1, 2-propanediol) by hexavalent chromium was studied in aqueous acetic acid
perchlolric acid mixtures. The reactions were first order with respect to oxidant and substrate
concentrations.Whereas, reaction showed second order by varying acid concentration. With the change in the
concentration of manganous ion and solvent composition change in the rate of reaction was observed. In these
oxidation reactions an increase in rate was observed with decrease in dielectric constant pointing to the fact that these
are reactions between positive ion and dipolar. Arrhenius parameters were computed and a plausible mechanism was
postulated based on experimental results.
