Abstract:
|
The species Oroxylum indicum (L) Kurz (Bignoniaceae) is an indigenous and endangered medicinal tree commonly known as Sonapattha or Indian trumpet flower tree or tree of Damocles. It is well known for its enormous range of medicinal properties due to possession of bioactive constituents present in all the parts of the plant and found to be important in traditional medicine such as Ayurveda and Unani system. Different parts of the tree are known to possesss antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiangiogenic, antidiabetic, anticancerous, immunomodulatory activities. In addition to its medicinal values it also possesses economic value as its stem bark is used in preparation of a Khakhi dye, Agarbathi and also found to have enhancing effect on silk production of Bombyx mori. The main objective of this review article is to critically analyze and evaluate the published scientific evidence including our research work and highlight claims from the traditional medicine for the usage of O. indicum in healing and curing of various diseases that would benefit from further scientific evaluation for future clinical research.
