Abstract:

Zanthoxylum armatum DC. is extensively used in traditional practices in North-Eastern India and neighboring regions including South-East Asia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate antibacterial and anti-fungal efficacy of the seeds of Zanthoxylum armatum DC.(Rutaceae). Different concentration of methanolic extracts were tested against four bacterial (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Vibrio coli and E.coli) and two fungal species (Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans). The zone of inhibition of methanolic extract was determined by well diffusion method. The antibiotics Ciprofloxacin and Clotrimazole were used as a positive control for bacteria and fungi respectively. The results showed that gram positive bacteria are more sensitive to methanolic extract than gram negative bacteria.
