The aim of the present investigation was to determine the dilution capacity index and lubricant sensitivity ratio of native and modified starches dispersions in mucilage obtained from Ipomoea batatas and compared to those of microcrystalline cellulose (PH101) and mannitol. Ipomoea batatas starch were pregelatinized and acid modified, subsequently, dispersions of mucilage with native (30-MSPS), pregelatinized (30-MPPS) and acid modified (30-MAPS) starches in a ratio of 3:10 respectively were produced. Ascorbic acid at various concentrations (0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 % w/w) was used as the reference drug in computing the dilution capacity index. The order of decreasing dilution capacity index was microcrystalline cellulose > 30-MPPS > 30-MAPS > 30-MSPS > mannitol. The overall order of lubricant sensitivity ratios at lower pressure was microcrystalline cellulose < mannitol < 30-MPPS < 30-MAPS < 30-MSPS and at higher pressure, the order was 30-MAPS < 30-MPPS < 30-MSPS < microcrystalline cellulose < mannitol.
