Abstract:

Gardenia latifolia Ait. is a small deciduous ornamental tree of Rubiaceae family and found throughout the greater part of India. Different parts of the plant are used traditionally for the treatment of various ailments like rheumatism, cuts, wounds, diarrhea, dysentery, remedy for indigestion in children etc. The essential oil of flowers is reported to contain several monoterpenes viz. borneol acetate, linalool, a-pinene and a-terpineol. However this plant is not yet been explored by the researchers for their probable pharmacological activities. This review will therefore support the future investigators for further screening of the drug to expedite the natural drug discovery process.
