Liposomes, spherical vesicles consisting of one or more phospholipid bilayers, which were first described in the mid 60s by Bangham and Coworkers. The topical liposomal preparations are used for the treatment of rosacea which is a chronic cutaneous disorder affecting primarily the convexities of the central face mostly in the cheek, nose, chin, and central forehead. It is a very common skin disorder in Northern European and Celtic origin between 30 and 50 years of age. It is more common in women, but may be more severe in men. More aggressive and innovative uses of existing oral agents have resulted in novel therapeutic approaches, which can provide long-term therapy and sustained remission. Topical metronidazole has been designated an orphan drug by the FDA for the treatment of rosacea. Different features initiates the formulation of Metronidazole topical liposomal gel for better penetrability and affectivity as compared to the topical gel alone for the better treatment of rosacea.
