The fight against pathogens is becoming a continuous exercise due to development of resistance by the organisms. The
emergence of researches on the antimicrobial properties of plant parts may bring solutions to these problems. The antimicrobial
activities of the methanolic extract (ME) and water extract (WE) of Alchornea cordifolia leaf against Pseudomonas
aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans were investigated. Agar diffusion and agar dilution
methods were used for the antimicrobial screening. The extracts showed broad spectrum activity against Pseudomonas
aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, fungi/yeast - Candida albicans with diameter of zones of inhibition
ranging from 11.0 to 30.0 mm. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (M.I.C.)/Minimum Bactericidal/Fungicidal Concentrations
(M.B.C/M.F.C.) of the extracts against the organisms was found to fall between1.25–20.0 mg/ml. The observed
antimicrobial activities in this study proved that the leaf extracts of Alchornea cordifolia support the forcloric claims of the
use of Alchornea cordifolia in the treatment of ailments such as wound dressing.
