There is a need for non living adjuvant vectors that will allow a full range of local and systemic
immune responses to orally administered purified antigens. Immunostimulating complexes
(ISCOMs) are recently developed for vaccines preparation as adjuvant in an industrial
use with increase safety, efficacy and convenience for demanding applications. The immunostimulating
complex or ISCOM is one adjuvant with multiple adjuvant properties. ISCOM
have the ability to stimulate the cell-mediated immune system as well as to enhance antibody
production and have the advantage that only a low dose is needed for adjuvant activity. Because
ISCOM-based vaccines have now progressed to phase I and II human trials, This review
documents our present understanding of the structure, preparation and functional properties
of ISCOMs and will describe some recent development and modifications that have
been made to enable ISCOMs to be suitable for human applications.
