The present study was undertaken to extract mucilage from the seeds of Blepharis edulis Pers. and explored its use as a tablet disintegrant. Various physico-chemical properties were evaluated and compared it with starch. Dried mucilage has superior swelling capacity, good flow property and excellent compressibility as compared starch. Diclofenac sodium tablet containing dried mucilage and starch were prepared. In present study, effect of amount of addition of disintegrant and effect of different filler like dibasic calcium phosphate and lactose in tablets, on disintegration time, crushing strength and friability were studied. A difference in disintegration time was also observed when tablets containing different filler. It was concluded that tablets prepared with lactose take more time to disintegrate as compared to tablets containing dibasic calcium phosphate. Final selection of optimized batch was carried out from crushing strength – friability / disintegration time (CSFR/DT) ratio. Stability study of optimized batch was carried out at 40oC and 75% RH for three months.
