Gelatin capsules, especially soft gelatin capsules, have become increasingly important as a form of medication since it became feasible, in the 1930's, to manufacture them by making and filling the capsules in a single operation. The soft gel dosage form offers several advantages over other oral dosage forms, such as formulating a liquid matrix which is designed to solubilize and improve the oral bioavailability of a poorly soluble compound as a unit dose solid dosage form. There are two types of capsules, “hard” and “soft”. The hard capsule is also called “two pieces” as it consists of two pieces in the form of small cylinders closed at one end, the shorter piece is called the “cap” which fits over the open end of the longer piece, called the “body”. The soft gelatin capsule is also called as “one piece”.
This article is an overview on soft gelatin capsules; their advantages, disadvantages, special types, methods of preparation, uses all have been mentioned in detail in the article. The cause of gelatin cross linking, its mechanism and measures to prevent the same is also discussed in the article. The encapsulation process is also discussed. The methods soft gelatin capsules testing such as gelatin ribbon thickness, uniformity of mass, in vitro studies, etc are also mentioned in the article.
