In-vitro and In-vivo Models of Urolithiasis

Author: LOVELY THAKUR, ADITI THAKUR, GOLDIE UPPAL, NEHA SITAPARA, LOVELY THAKUR, ADITI THAKUR1
Abstract: Kidney stone is a disease of historical times. From last decade it is having more attention because there is no satisfactory treatment available due to maximum chances of recurrence; hence continuous research has been carried out in this regard for development of suitable therapy. Investigation of antiurolithiatic potential of any compound has been carried out using both in-vivo and in-vitro models. Different models are used for determining the mechanism of antiurolithiatic action depending on the nature of test compound and purpose of study. In this review, in-vitro models as xanthine oxidase and crystal size inhibition supporting antiurolithiatic potential are explained. A number of in-vivo models as allantoxanamide induced, ethylene glycol induced, glycolate induced, oxonic acid induced, zinc disc induced urolithiasis, Dalmatian dogs, Cebus monkey, Swine model and their mechanism of stone induction has been described for selection of a suitable model for study.
