The genus Viburnum under the family Caprifoliaceae contains about 200 species in
the world and about 17 of them have been reported to survive in India. A few of them are
official in pharmacopoeia (British Herbal Pharmacopoeia) and reported to posses a marked
activity against uterine disorders. The chemical constituents elaborated by these species include
poly-phenolic compounds di and triterpenoids and their glycosides. The current study
encompasses some pharmacognostical investigations carried out on the stems of two of the
species, collected from Nilgiri hills, Tamil Nadu, India, namely: Viburnum punctatum Buch.-
Ham.ex D.Don and Viburnum coriaceum Blume. The findings of the study focus mainly on
how to differentiate one species from the other accounting macroscopical, anatomical, preliminary
phytochemical and physicochemical characteristics. The parameters derived upon
this comparative study may be useful towards the further scientific investigations on these
species in future.
