Needle free injection technology (NFIT) is a very broad concept that includes a variety of drug delivery systems that use various forces, such as Lorentz, shock waves, gas pressure, or electrophoresis, to propel drugs through the skin. This effectively eliminates the need for hypodermic needles. This technique, which avoids the risk of needle stick injuries and other complications like those resulting from using a single needle repeatedly, is not only recognized as helpful for the pharmaceutical sector but also for mass vaccination programs in underdeveloped nations. The NFIT devices can be broadly classified into various types based on their mechanism of working, type of load carried, drug delivery mechanism and site of delivery. The sterility, shelf life, and viscosity of the drug formulation are the primary factors that need to be considered in order to provide a stable, safe, and effective dose using NFIT. The technology's value is further increased by technically advanced needle-free injection systems due to their ability to administer highly viscous drug formulations that conventional needle and syringe systems cannot administer. Several variants of this technology, including Bioject® ZetaJetTM, Vitajet 3, Tev-Tropin®, and others, are presently available in the market. With multiple devices being marketed following FDA certification and the growing global market, additional capital has been invested in the development of this technology.
