Abstract: Aim: The primary goal of this study is to collect substantial evidence and analyse them systematically to evaluate the possible effectiveness of “Whole Black Wheat” (WBW)(Triticum aestivum). Methods used for review: Literature related to anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic and immunomodulatory phytoconstituents identified in WBW were reviewed. Literature containing activities (Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory (acute inflammation)) performed on WBW were collected. The phytoconstituents and activities in connection with acute inflammation and Rheumatoid Arthritis were carefully analysed and the possible mechanisms of anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activities might be established. Conclusion: The presence of highest phenolic content and total flavonoid were the main contributing factors for the significant antioxidant activity of the whole black wheat compared to the other varieties of wheat. The prevention of increase in tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-a and interleukin (IL)-6 could be useful in both acute and chronic inflammatory disorders like Rheumatoid Arthritis. Thus, this investigative review provided adequate evidence to believe that whole black wheat might be a good choice for starting a research study for evaluation of its efficacy in subacute inflammation and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
