A cross sectional study to evaluate the Sleep related Beliefs, Attitudes and Practices among undergraduate medical students

Abstract:

Introduction and Aim: Sleep is very important for the physical and the mental health. This study is aimed to capture information about knowledge, beliefs and activity of sleep among medical undergraduate students. Materials and Methods: Study design used was a cross-sectional study design and modified standardized Sleep Practices and Attitudes Questionnaire (SPAQ) was the study tool used to capture information about sleep. 399 participants volunteered and participated in the study by filling the consent and questionnaire forms. Results- 79.70% of the study population was found to have sleep less than recommended 7 hours. Though they are suffering with negative aspects of inadequate sleep like inadequate restfulness and day time sleepiness in greater than 50% only 27.32% of the study sample feel that they have difficulty with their sleep. Conclusion- Students who are supposed to promote/ advocate good health are also in danger of inadequate sleep. More studies need to be conducted to evaluate the trends of sleep and behavioural changes to promote good sleep need to be deployed.
