Evaluating the Accuracy of Weight Estimation Tools for Children Aged 1 to 11 Years

Abstract: Introduction: Accurate weight estimation in children is crucial when admitted forpediatric emergency careto facilitate drug dosing, fluid resuscitation, and medical interventions. In emergency settings direct measurement is often impractical, whichnecessitates more reliable estimation methods. Hence this study was planned to compare four weight estimation techniques—Broselow Tape, Modified Broselow Tape, Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC), and Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS) formula—to determine their efficacy and accuracy in South Indian children. Materials and Methods:This prospective analytical study was conducted among 650 children aged between 1 and 11 years at a tertiary care Medical College and Hospital between June 2023 and June 2024. Children were stratified by age, and their actual weights were measured using a calibrated digital scale. Weight estimates were also obtained using Broselow Tape, Modified Broselow Tape (with body habitus scoring), MUAC, and APLS formula. Data collected were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 26, with descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and correlation analysis performed to assess the accuracy of each method. Results: Broselow Tape and Modified Broselow Tape provided a relatively consistent weight estimates across all age groups compared to other methods, with strong correlations to actual weight. MUAC was accurate in younger children but it was less reliable in older age groups. APLS frequently overestimated weight, especiallyamong older children. Conclusion: Broselow Tape and Modified Broselow Tape are the relatively effective weight estimation methods for pediatric emergencies, while MUAC is a reasonable alternative for younger children. APLS demonstrated considerable inaccuracy and should be used with caution. Region-specific modifications to existing tools may enhance their applicability in diverse populations.
