Medical devices have increasingly become a vital component of modern healthcare, and the surge in their use has corresponded with a rise in reported adverse effects worldwide. Medical faculty and residents are pivotal
in reporting these adverse events. Nonetheless, there is a notable paucity of published data concerning their knowledge, attitude, and practices related to Materiovigilance in India.
Methods:A cross-sectional observational study was conducted among medical professionals in a tertiary care teaching hospital using a pre-validated questionnaire with 19 questions related to knowledge, attitude, and
practice of Materiovigilance.
Results:The questionnaire was administered to 500 medical faculty and residents, with 419 responding, resulting in an 83.8% response rate. The study revealed that only 42.95% of participants were aware of an ongoing Materiovigilance program, 32.69% had received training on MV, and 69.21% considered reporting ADRs necessary, though only 6.20% had reported such events in practice. However, a majority (89.73%) believed that medical devices can cause adverse events, and 85.68% strongly agreed that such programs are
effective in monitoring AE caused by medical devices and expressed willingness to undergo further training.
Conclusion: While medical faculty and residents are familiar with the term "Materiovigilance," there is a gap in their knowledge about its implementation and reporting. Their attitude towards it is positive, but reporting practices need improvement. To address this, educational intervention programs are recommended to enhance awareness and encourage regular reporting of adverse device reactions (ADRs) related to medical devices in daily practice.
