Aim:The study's objectives were to (1) know the various modalities of treatment used by Diabetes mellitus patients in a 1000 bedded hospital, (2) assess the effect of counselling on patients taking Insulin injection using a Questionnaire.
Methodology:For six months, an observational study was carried out. Detailed information of the participants was evaluated. Patients were receiving Insulin injections at a home among diabetes patients were counselled regarding proper technique and asked to complete a questionnaire. After 14 days, a follow-up was conducted to determine the counselling's effectiveness.
Results:A total of 270 patients were enrolled in the study and majority was male. Among the oral Anti-diabetic medications, the majority of prescriptions for monotherapy were for metformin(20.74%) and Metformin + Glimepiride (15.56) as combination therapy while the most frequently administered injectable anti-diabetic medicine was human insulin regular(65.18%) as monotherapy and Isophane Insulin + Human Mixtard (10.34%) as combination therapy. The effect of counselling was assessed with the help of questionnaire and the results showed that although baseline levels of understanding of insulin injection technique were inadequate, they greatly improved following patient counselling.
Conclusion:The most extensively prescribed oral hypoglycemic drug was metformin, and Human insulin regular was the most extensively prescribed insulin. The statistical analysis shows that there is significant difference observed in cases taking insulin before and after the patient counselling, indicating that patient counselling has an impact on perfecting the knowledge.
