A Study on phytochemical analysis and anticariogenic activity of root extract of Mukia maderaspatana (L.) ROEM

Author: M.KAVITHA , S.ISHWARYA
Abstract: Dental caries or Tooth decay is widely caused by bacterial infection. Even though the bacteria are ubiquitous, the disease burden is widespread amongst some populations. Though there are several treatment strategies available for dental caries, the search for an effective agent without side effects preferably from plant origin continues. M.maderaspatana (L) Roemer (family:Curcurbitaceae) is a leafy vegetable, widely distributed in India. It is commonly called as ‘Musumusukkai’ in Tamil. It possess a wide range of pharmacological properties. The present study was aimed to evaluate the anticariogenic activity of M.maderaspatana root extract. The root powder contained 44% of ash and 22% moisture. Its carbohydrate, protein and lipid content were found to be 2%, 7.2% and 1% respectively. Preliminary qualitative phytochemical analysis indicated the presence of alkaloids, flavanoids, quinones, phenols, tannins and phenolic compounds. All the root extracts were found active against all tested gram positive S.mutans, E.feacalis, L.acidus, A.viscous and gram negative E.coli. Among various extracts, ethanol extract showed highest inhibitory activity (16mm) against L.acidus followed by acetone extract at 50µg/ml. Thus it can be concluded that root extract of M.maderaspatana was effective against oral pathogens.
