Preparation and Evaluation of Methanolic Extract of Heliotropium indicum (H. indicum) for Hepatoprotective activity

Author: LEELA KALYANI MARTHA, KAVYA SRI PULAPARTHI, MAMATHA PITTA, DEVI LANKADI
Abstract: Liver is the largest gland performing about 500 vital functions. Detoxification of blood is the major function of the liver. The methanolic extract was prepared by using whole plant of Heliotropium indicum (Boraginaceae). Whole plant was collected and extraction was prepared by using methanol as solvent. The methanolic extract was screened for hepatoprotective activity by different in vivo and in vitro methods. In vitro activity was performed to evaluate the antioxidant and cytoprotective properties of H. indicum. In vivo activity was performed by inducing hepatotoxicity in rats using paracetamol and blood samples were collected from animals for biochemical parameters (SGOT, SGPT) estimation. Methanolic extract (250mg/kg, 500mg/kg p.o.) was served for two groups of rats as test sample. Paracetamol and CMC suspensions were served for diseased and control groups, whereas silymarin for standard group. Biochemical parameters were estimated and compared with Control group. Antioxidant and cytoprotective activity showed effective results. Antioxidant activity of methanolic extract showed protective action against the oxidative stress caused by the metabolite of paracetamol by free radical scavenging action. Cytoprotective activity of methanolic extract at different concentration (250mg/kg, 500mg/kg) appeared to be safe and non-cytotoxic. In vivo studies proved that the methanolic extract has promising hepatoprotective activity.
