Total Phenolic Content, Flavonoid Content And Antioxidant Potential Of Leaves And Stems Of Dioscorea Floribunda

Author: ATUL SHANKARRAO BHUJBAL, RAJENDRA PATIL, ADITYA NATH PANDEY
Abstract: Bio-efficacy of plants and their derivatives have been reemphasized in recent times. In the last few years, there has been an exponential growth in the field of herbal medicine and gaining popularity both in developing and developed countries because of their natural origin and less side effects. Medicinal plants continue to be an important therapeutic aid for alleviating ailments of humankind. The aim of the present study was to evaluate qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analysis and in vitro antioxidant activities of leaves and stems of Dioscorea floribunda (D. floribunda) collected from Bhopal region of Madhya Pradesh. Qualitative analysis of various phytochemical constituents was performed by the well-known test protocol available in the literature. Quantitative analysis of phenolic and flavonoids was carried out by Folins Ciocalteau reagent and aluminum chloride method respectively. The in vitro antioxidant activity of ethanoic extract of the leaves and stems was assessed against DPPH, reducing power assay and superoxide radical scavenging assay method using standard protocols. Phytochemical analysis of leaves and stems ethanoic extracts of D. floribunda revealed the presence of flavonoids, phenols, proteins, carbohydrate, tannins and saponins. The total phenolic content of leaves and stems ethanoic extract was (0.874, 0.756 mg/gm), followed by flavonoids (0.924, 0.863mg/gm).The in vitro antioxidant activity of both leaves and stems ethanoic extract against DPPH, reducing power assay and superoxide radical scavenging assay method were concentration dependent. These studies provided information for standardization and correct identification of this plant material. The diverse array of phytochemicals present in the plant thus suggests its therapeutic potentials which may be explored in drug manufacturing industry as well as in traditional medicine.
