Author: UPLOADED BY-ADMIN, B. H. JOSHI, C. P. SHAH
Abstract: AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) have caused millions of death throughout the world. It continues to overwhelm current prophylactic measures at an increasing rate due to addition of new infections. Over the past few years, out of 33.6 million positive cases reported, out of these more than one half cases belongs to only women. These suggest that women are more vulnerable to HIV infection than male. Even safe sex approaches have been proved to be inadequate in preventing heterosexual transmission of HIV. In absence of HIV vaccine, microbicide - a new HIV preventive approach will benefit specially women by augmenting their abilities to manage their sexual health. This microbicides are the formulations that can reduce the transmission of HIV and other STDs when used in vagina or rectum. Though no such microbicide is at present available in the market but many microbicides are under various stages of clinical development. Microbicides has evolved as an attractive approach for preventing AIDS and other STDs.
