Abstract: The Omega-3 fatty acids viz. Docosahexaenoic and Eicosapentaenoic acids have been shown to be potential memory enhancers, which improve learning behaviour, motor skills and check cognitive deterioration To evaluate the psychomotor performance of Docosahexaenoic acid and Eicosapentaenoic acid in comparison to placebo, 39 healthy men medical student volunteers either received active drug i.e. Omega-3 fatty acids (n=20) or placebo (n=19) twice a day, postprandial for 16 weeks. Two types of psychomotor performance tests were conducted at baseline, and 2, 4, 8, 12 and 16 weeks after drug intake. The instrumental tests included Simple Reaction Time Task, Multiple Choice Reaction Time Task, Critical Flicker Fusion Threshold Task and Tracking Performance Task whereas non-instrumental tests used were Digit Cancellation Task, Memory Test and Mental Arithmetic Task. In comparison to placebo, Omega-3 fatty acids significantly decreased Simple Reaction Time score from 12 weeks onwards (p<0.05) whereas significant increase was observed in Critical Flicker Fusion Threshold score after 12 weeks onwards (p<0.05). Omega-3 fatty acids were significantly effective than placebo from 4 weeks onwards in Tracking Performance Task score (p<0.001), from 8 weeks in Digit Cancellation Task score (p<0.05) and Mental Arithmetic Task score (p<0.05), and from 12 weeks in Memory Test score (p<0.05). None of the reported adverse events were serious to warrant discontinuation of the drug. Omega-3 fatty acids are efficacious in improving cognitive functions.
