The present study deals with the macroscopical and microscopical studies of Launaea sarmentosa (Willd.) Sch. Bip. ex
Kuntze leaf, stem and root. The anatomy of the leaf, stem and root were studied by taking transverse section. The leaf
ground tissue was homogenous and parenchymatous with wide, angular, thin walled compact cells. Stomata occur on both
surface of the lamina, anomocytic type stomata. The stem vascular cylinder was wide, circular and hollow. It consists of
about thirteen wedge shaped vascular strand which alternate with narrow sclerenchymatous interfacicular segments. Wide
circular laticiferous canals were seen in the pith. The root consist of secondary phloem has wide dilated rays and scattered
sieve elements, some of which were collapsed into dark masses. Secondary xylem consists of diffusely distributed dense
vessels and thick walled, lignified xylem fibres. Various parameters like powder analysis, fluorescence analysis,
physicochemical constant and phytochemicals analysis were studied. These observations would be of immense value in the
botanical identification and standardization of the drugs in the crude form. This study would help to distinguish the drugs
from its other species.
