The growing population and rising energy requirements are putting great strain on our non-renewable sources and also, adding to the pollution problem. In order to tackle with these issues, quick and stringent measures need to be taken to develop sustainable energy sources. The use of microalgae in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) is a good alternative as it leads to energy generation from waste material and also helps in waste management. Moreover, the algal biomass cultivated can also be used for biofuel production and many value-added products can also be generated. This review discusses the basic electron transfer mechanisms in algae, the role microalgae in energy generation at the anode and cathode and the various parameters that affect microalgal bioenergy generation and productivity.
