Urtica dioica L.: A Review of its Nutritional and Pharmacological Activities

Abstract: Urtica dioica L., a perennial medicinal herb member of the Urticaceae family, widely known as stinging nettle. It is distributed in the South Asian Countries, Indian subcontinent and has a long history of usage. This herb is found to have high nutrient content as well as active biological compounds such as phytosterols, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, protein, and amino acids. Nettle is considered to have a remarkable pharmacological potential such as anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, anti-microbial, hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and platelet aggregation. Nettle is safe having no side effects and toxicity. Roots of the nettle are mainly used for anti-microbial, benign prostatic hyperplasia and immunomodulatory effect. Additionally, nettle leaves helpful for allergic rhinitis, arthritis and rheumatism.
