Mushrooms are the fleshy spore bearing fruit which lack chlorophyll. They possess high nutritional, medicinal and therapeutic values. Mushroom have a chemical selenium which helps to inhibit diabetes, cancer and, cardiac diseases. Mushroom also helps to prevent and reduce the risk of cholesterol levels and to enhance weight loss. The present study focused on the comparison of anti-oxidant and anti-diabetic activities of Agaricus bisporus and Pleurotus ostreatus. The phytochemical screening of the two mushroom varieties in various extracts like aqueous, hydroethanol, ethanol, chloroform and acetone were performed. The hydroethanolic extract of Agaricus bisporus and Pleurotus ostreatus exhibited the high level of phytochemical constituents like carbohydrates, proteins, phenols, tannins, steroids and flavonoids. Therefore the hydroethanolic extracts of two species were compared for DPPH free radical scavenging activity, estimation of enzymatic and non-enzymatic anti-oxidants as well as anti-diabetic activity by a-amylase inhibition assay. The results revealed that the anti-oxidant activity was higher in Agaricus bisporus than Pleurotus ostreatus whereas the a-amylase inhibition activity was higher in Pleurotus ostreatus than Agaricus bisporus.
