The objective of this present study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity potential of 3 propionic acid derivatives 3-(4-Aminophenyl)propionic acid (3-4APPA), 3-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)propionic acid (3-4HPPA) and 2-(4-(2-methylpropyl)phenyl)propanoic acid (2-4-2MPPPA). 2-(4-(2-methylpropyl)phenyl)propanoic acid or Ibuprofen is a commonly used over the counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (OTC NSAID). As NSAIDs are capable of inducing liver damage, normal (THLE-2 cells) and tumour (HEPG2 cells) liver cells were incubated in vitro with these three 3 propionic acid derivatives and the cytotoxic potential was measured using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The incubations revealed THLE-2 cells were more susceptible to all 3 propionic acid derivatives when compared to HEPG2 cells. 3-4APPA was moderately cytotoxic when compared to the other 2 compounds. 2-4-2MPPPA or Ibuprofen was the least cytotoxic to both cell lines. Thus, the results from this present study proved the safety of ibuprofen as an OTC NSAID which is one of the most popular NSAID worldwide.
