Effect of various solvents and extraction methods on polyphenol, chlorophyll, and antioxidant activities of Centella asiatica grown in south-center, Vietnam

Author: DANG BUU TUNG THIEN, VU NGOC BOI, NGO DANG NGHIA, DANG XUAN CUONG
Abstract: In the world and Vietnam, Centella asiatica is a medicine plant and contains phytochemistry compositions possessing value bioactivities. Therefore, the paper focused on the impact of three extraction methods (soxhlet, static soak, and ultrasound-assisted) and eight solvent kinds (n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, diethyl ether, methanol, ethanol, aqueous, and acetone) on polyphenol, chlorophyll, and antioxidant activities of Centella asiatica grown in Khanh Hoa province, Vietnam. The results showed that the difference in polyphenol, chlorophyll, and antioxidant activities between other extracts from Centella asiatica was significant (p<0.05). The ultrasound-assisted extraction caused the highest polyphenol content, total antioxidant activity, and reducing power activity, corresponded to 3.512 mg gallic acid equivalent/g DW, 1.740 mg ascorbic acid/g DW, and 9.822 mg FeSO4/g DW, respectively, when using ethanol, wherein chlorophyll got the highest value (2.439 mg chlorophyll equivalent/g DW) in acetone extract. Polyphenols and chlorophyll in the protic extracts possessed antioxidant activity more than the aprotic and non-polar solvents. The current study could support the separation controlling of antioxidant polyphenol, chlorophyll from Centella asiatica for applicating into functional food and pharmaceuticals.
