Recently transdermal patches gained most popularity due to its obvious ease of application and patient compliance. These patches are exploited for generally for local use and rarely for systemic drug delivery. Delivering synthetic or herbal actives through skin is still not a promising technique because of the various physicochemical properties of drug, its dosage form and physiological properties of the skin. This review is an attempt to compile the above details emphasising the recent advancements in the preparation such as iontophoresis, electrophoresis, microneedle and sonophoresis and in vitro & in vivo evaluation of the patches.
