Strain examination using tissue tracking CMR in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)

Author: MARZIEH MOTEVALLI, KOROSH ESFANDIARI, KIANOSH KASANI
Abstract: Background: Cardiovascular magnetic resonance is a new quantitative method that uses cine CMR to calculate strain values. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the results of CMR use in patients with HCM using Tissue Tracking Technique. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional and prospective study was conducted in 2018 in Shahid Rajaee Hospital. The study population included 45 patients with HCM and 45 healthy subjects. Using CMR data, longitudinal, transverse, and total volume of the heart were measured in patients. All CMRs were performed by a 1.5-Tesla device. Results: We evaluated the CMR images of 90 individuals, including 45 HCM patients (50%) and 45 healthy controls (50%). The basic population profile of the study is shown in Table 1. In total, 64 patients (71.1%) were male and the mean age was 33.49 ± 8.85 years. No significant difference was found between HCM patients and control subjects in terms of age (P = 0.150), but there were significant differences between two groups in terms of gender (P = 0.020). Also, 68.8% were married and 31.2% were single. There was no significant relationship between the two groups in terms of tachycardia status (P = 0.225). This study showed that CMR has a high sensitivity, specificity, and high degree of identification of HCM patients (90%, 73% and 74% respectively). Conclusion: Overall, the results showed that the method used was able to differentiate HCM patients from controls by global / regional strain, which indicates the strength / accuracy of TTCMR measurements, in a way these results show the high TR-CMR potential as a good diagnostic test for HCM patients.
