Casearia esculenta (Salicacea) have been used as a popular remedy for the treatment of diabetes in whole of South East Asia. Despite the well documented use of this plant for the treatment of diabetes and it’s used in various marketed antidiabetic formulations like D-400 and diabecon, no other pharmacological studies except for diabetes and related disorders have been reported on this plant. The plant contains mainly phytosteroids, carbohydrate, glycosides, tannins, flavanoids and di and triterpenes. The compound 3-hydroxymethyl xylitol (3-HMX) has been isolated from this plant and its long term antidiabetic effect established and patented. The present review aims to discuss the current understanding regarding the traditional uses, phytochemical, antidiabetic and related disorders studies and molecular docking studies carried out on isolated compound of C. esculenta, and their possible research opportunities. In literature except for a review on the genus Casearia, no other compilation on Casearia esculenta could be found.
