Prolonged efforts have recently been focused on targeting a drug or drug delivery system in a targeted region of the body for prolonged period of time, not only for local targeting of drugs but also for the improved drug release of systemic drug delivery. The oral bioavailability of tenofovir in fasted patients is approximately 25% which was very less when given as immediate release dosage form. The main aim of the present research work was to formulate and evaluate Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate loaded mucoadhesive beads using ionotropic external gelation technique by varying concentrations of sodium alginate, HPMC, SCMC with calcium chloride and aluminium chloride as gellant solutions for controlled drug delivery system. The objective of this research is to improve the rate and extent of absorption of drug, to maintain long shelf life and to improve clinical potency and to decrease drug toxicity and to maintain controlled drug delivery.
