A Review of Vernonia amygdalina Del.'s Antioxidant and Anticancer Activities

Vernonia amygdalina Del. is a perennial shrub in the Asteraceae family that is widely grown and consumed as a vegetable in Africa. Its bitter flavor has earned it the nickname "bitter leaf." V. amygdalina is the most widely used medicinal plant in the Vernonia genus. It has long been used in traditional medicine to treat and/or manage a variety of diseases in humans and animals. The antioxidant and anticancer properties of V. amygdalina were summarized in this review. This review also discussed the proposed anticancer pharmacological actions, anticancer bioactive compounds, the type of cancer cell inhibited, the plant parts responsible for the anticancer activity, and the nature of the extracts used in the studies.
