The Punicaceae family member Pomegranate is a well-known fruit with a long history in Iran and the Middle East. Pomegranates contain a large number of constituents that possess an impressive role in the management of health. Due to its extensive pharmacological properties, Pomegranate (Punica granatum) has been dubbed a "wonder fruit" over the last decade. Due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, it has high nutritional value as well as numerous health benefits. Because of the presence of bioflavonoids, it can inhibit the production of free radicals and is also reported to inhibit lipoxygenases and thus recommended as an ingredient of various pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. The fruit of the pomegranate has been recommended as a pharmaceutical and food ingredient in the treatment of HIV/AIDS. Worldwide, the use and medicinal properties of pomegranate have attracted the attention of a large number of researchers. Significant efforts and progress have been made in determining the pharmacological mechanisms and constituents involved in the reported biological effect. This review paper has summarized information about the therapeutic and pharmacological applications of different phytoconstituents of pomegranate.
