Flood Risk Zoning by Combining Fuzzy AHP Approach and GIS (Case study: Aligudarz-Azna basin)

Abstract: Floods can be caused by heavy or continuous rain or sudden melting of snow or by the breaking of a dam. Increasing population and land use change, such as the conversion of floodplains to recreational areas and the development of residential areas are the main reasons for the increase in damage. Due to its natural talent, Iran is one of the most flood-prone countries in the world. Therefore, the development of zoning models and flood prediction is very important and necessary to make optimal decisions before and after the flood and its management. One of the flood management methods is the use of non-structural flood zoning method. The aim of this study is to develop urban flood risk zoning based on multi-criteria decision analysis and GIS. This model was developed using 8 criteria of rainfall, distance from waterway, drainage density, slope, altitude, lithology, land use and vegetation. The Fuzzy AHP method was used as one of the most efficient multi-criteria decision systems. In this method, fuzzy numbers are used to compare pairs of options and geometric averaging method is used to obtain weights and preferences. The final hazard map was obtained by applying the weights of the criteria and each of their classes in GIS. Flood risk map shows that waterways and their confines have the greatest potential for flooding.
