Abstract:

Commiphora caudata (Wight &Arn) is a traditional medicinal plant that belongs to the family Burseraceae, commonly known for its antibacterial, antifungal, analgesic, anti-inflammatory activity. Its resinous exudate is named “myrrh” used in Chinese medicines for the ailment of trauma, arthritis, fracture, and blood stagnation. In Ayurveda, it is used for treating coronary artery ailment, inflammatory disease, Neuropharmacological disease, obesity, etc.
The genus Commiphora consists of 190 plant species. This species has a restricted global distribution occurring only in a few countries. It is mainly confined to African countries. It is also distributed in peninsular India, Sri Lanka. and Arabia. In India, it was found in dry deciduous, and scrub forests of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. The tree is harvested mainly for its local medicinal use, revenue, and also for ornamental purposes.
This review mainly focused on the updated phytopharmacology of Commiphora caudata such as antioxidant, hepatoprotective, anti-ulcer, analgesic, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and neuropharmacological effects along with Phytoconstituents profile. It will also provide information about the clinical applications of Commiphora caudata and new product development in the field of the Pharmaceutical Industry.
