Assessment of Phytochemical Constituents and GC-MS Profile of Persea americana (avocado pear) and Dacryodes edulis (African pear) Ethanolic Seed Extracts.

Author: SHALOM CHINEDU, BLESSING ONYIDO, FRANKLYN IHEAGWAM
Abstract: Various parts of P. americana (PA) and D. edulis (DE) have been extensively employed in herbal medicine in Africa, Mexico and other countries for the treatment of several ailments, owing to their vast array of phytocompounds. Total phenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), total tannin content (TTC), total flavonol content (TFlC), ß-carotene and lycopene were estimated spectrometrically following standard procedures. Gas chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technique was further used to obtain quantitative information on the bioactive compounds responsible for their medicinal properties. Results from the quantitative analysis showed that DE had higher TPC (685 ± 4.7 µgGAE/ ml), TTC (21.71 ± 0.4 µgTAE/ml) and TFlC (569.53 ± 150.03 µgQE/ml) than PA. While PA had higher TFC (189.8 ± 54.24 µgRE/ml), ß-carotene (141 µg CAE/g) and lycopene (88.41 µg CAE/g). The GC-MS spectra identified a total of 46 and 44 bioactive compounds in PA and DE, respectively. Some of the compounds identified include 9,12-octadecadienoic acid, vitamin E, ß-sitosterol, ?-sitosterol, and caryophylleneoxide. The findings in this study supports the health claims and ethnomedicinal uses of the seeds of PA and DE, hence more toxicity studies are crucial to understand the safety as well as potential toxicity of the seeds.
