The pharmacist’s role in improving the insulin pen injection techniques in elderly diabetes mellitus patients in Iraq.

Abstract: insulin is a complex liable protein that is crucial for diabetes mellitus disease, D.M have many complications including hyperglycemia. For the best glycemic control, the patients should use the insulin pens in the correct way to ensure the delivery of the accurate dose of insulin. Pharmacist as a health care provider and medications supplier have a great impact in teaching the patients through a direct communication to make sure that the patient know all the information required for the proper device use and medication administration. 137 patients were involved in our study,89 males and 48 females, above 55 years old and using insulin pens for 3 months at least. The list of instruction included the disinfection of injection area, folding the skin before injection, correct angle of injection, the proper storage of the insulin pens and the time needed for the needle to remain under the skin. After the pharmacists intervention the percentage of errors were reduced and better outcomes resulted regarding the HbA1c levels for a better glycemic control, the correct use of insulin pens has showed an improvement in HbA1c levels (8.8 ± 0.5 to 6.9 ± 0.3) of <0.001 p value. On the other hand, the pharmacist instructed the patient to follow a heathy life style to enhance their life quality.
