Background: Schizophrenia is currently recognized as a public health problem in both developed and developing countries. However, public knowledge of schizophrenia in developing countries is considerably limited.
Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted. Data were collected from adults aged 18-60 years residing in a special region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A pre-validated questionnaire was developed, divided into two main sections: demographics attribute and general knowledge of schizophrenia, including the etiology, symptoms, and treatment of schizophrenia.
Results: Out of the total study participants, 273 (68.76%) were found to have good knowledge. Those who lived in urban areas, older, had higher education, and worked as employees had better knowledge than those who lived in rural areas, younger, had low education, and unemployed.
Conclusion: Significant proportions of the community in Yogyakarta province were found to have good knowledge of schizophrenia. Residence, age, educational status, and occupation were found to be associated with knowledge of schizophrenia.
