The Effectiveness of Neurofeedback Education on Attentional Bias and Working Memory in People with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Author: SHIRIN ESMAEILI
Abstract: Background and purpose of the research: Obsessive-compulsive disorder is one of the common psychiatric disorders. Epidemiological studies have reported the prevalence rate of obsession symptoms in the above clinical population; therefore, applying the modern methods can be very useful. This research has been performed to evaluate the effectiveness of neurofeedback on attentional bias and working memory in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Methodology: Twenty patients with obsession referring to psychological counseling centers were selected voluntarily through convenience sampling technique. The participants were randomly assigned into two ten-individual groups (experimental and control). In this research, the obsession scale (Yale-Berne), Emotional Stroop test, and N-back test were used for data collection. In the beginning, the pre-test, and then the experimental intervention (neurofeedback) were performed on the experimental group during 15 1-hour sessions. After the treatment program, both groups were given a post-test. Multivariable Analyze of Covariance (MANCOVA) was used to analyze the data. For this purpose, SPSS software was used. Findings: The results showed that neurofeedback was significantly associated with a reduction of attentional bias and increase of working memory and a reduction of the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder in people with obsession syndrome(p <0.05). Conclusion: Neurofeedback education causes reduction of the symptoms of obsession and attentional bias and increases working memory in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Therefore, this method can be used as an effective method in treating people with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
