This research was aimed at investigating the anti-snake venom activity of Strychnos spinosa in order to confirm their local
use. Groups of 5 mice each were pre-treated with the minimum lethal dose of Echis carinatus venom (2.13 mg/kg) for 10
minutes before administration of aqueous extract of the stembark of S spinosa. The results revealed that the LD50 of the
aqueous stem-bark extract of S. spinosa was 2154.1 mg/kg. The extract exhibited a significant (p < 0.05) dose dependent
anti-snake venom activity at doses of 500 mg/kg and 700 mg/kg.This study therefore confirm the local use of the plant in the
treatment of snake bites.
