Introduction: Children are one of the most vulnerable groups during earthquakes and lack of food resources and other disturbing variables affect growth of children during earthquakes, and these conditions cause growth and developmental disorders in children, including short stature. Hence, the present study was conducted to identify the factors affecting the growth status of children aged 2 to 5 years in earthquake-stricken areas of Kermanshah.
Materials and Methods: In the present study, out of 156 children aged 2 to 5 years, 71 were males and 85 were males. They participated in this study along with their parents. Samples were selected from earthquake-stricken areas of Sarpol-e Zahab and Thalas Babajani in Kermanshah as earthquake-stricken areas. Growth status of children in percentiles (weight, height and body mass index for age) (WAZ) (HAZ) (BAZ) before the earthquake was assessed using a post-earthquake questionnaire. Energy intake was assessed by 24-hour food recall questionnaire, household food security was assessed by 18-item USDA questionnaire, and household life satisfaction was assessed by Diener questionnaire (SWLS) and socioeconomic status of children household. Independent t-test, chi-square, ANOVA were used to analyze the relationship between children's growth status and other variables and multivariate logistic regression test was used to analyze the relationship between household food security and children's growth status.
Results: Results revealed that 34% of children in the study had food security and 66% were in the food insecurity without hunger status. Given the significant level of growth percentages (weight and height for age) and the significant level of P <0.05, there was a statistically significant difference between post-earthquake status and pre-earthquake status of the children. Given the significant level (P <0.03) in percentile of (weight for age) and (P <0.04) percentile of (body mass index for age), there is a statistically significant relationship between children growth status and energy intake. The results showed that, considering the significant level (P <0.05) in all three percentiles, there is a statistically significant relationship between post-earthquake children's growth status and children's household food security.
Conclusion: Based on the obtained results, with increasing the level of life satisfaction of household, household economic and social status and its food security status will be better. As a result, children will grow normally by receiving sufficient and nutritious energy.
