Investigating the Relationship Between Family Communication Patterns and Stress Coping Strategies and Self-Compassion in Islamic Azad University Students of North Tehran Branch

Author: MASOUMEH SADAT MAHDAVI RASHTI, SHOHREH GHORBAN SHIROUDI
Abstract: The current study aimed at investigating the relationship between family communication patterns and stress coping strategies with self-compassion. The methodology of the study was descriptive-correlational. The statistical population of the study included all 37367 girl and boy students of Islamic Azad University of North Tehran during 2020-2021. According to the Cochran formula, the sample size included 380 individuals selected using cluster random sampling method; they had responded to Neff`s (2003) Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), Ritchie and Fitzpatrick`s (1990) Revised Family Communication Patterns (RFCP) questionnaire, as well as Andler and Parker`s (1990) Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations-Short Form (CISS-SF) list. After removing 36 incomplete questionnaires having improper data, the data of 344 individuals were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis methods as well as utilizing SPSS, version 24, software. The findings indicated that there was a negative and significant relationship between family communication patterns (communication orientation), and problem-focused stress coping strategies, and students` self-compassion (p<0.01). Moreover, there was a positive and significant relationship between family communication patterns (conformity orientation) and avoidance-oriented stress coping strategies and students` self-compassion (p<0.01). The results of multiple regression analysis revealed that 51.7% and 74.8% of self-compassion variance were clarified respectively, through family communication patterns and stress coping strategies. The findings of the current study showed that family communication patterns and stress coping strategies had an important role in predicting students' self-compassion.
