Role of silver nanoparticles in Conservative Dentistry. A Review

Author: DR. BHARATHI PRIYA BDS, DR. SUJANA PRAVEEN MDS, DR. REKHA MDS, DR.VIJAY VENKATAKESH MDS
Abstract: Many studies has been performed in silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for their potent antibacterial properties. This higher antibacterial efficacy can be attributed to their small size, greater ability to penetrate into cell membranes and large surface area. These distinctive properties are provided at very low filler levels, thereby minimizing the silver particle concentration, needed to produce the desired effect. In conservative dentistry, AgNPs are also incorporated into dental materials to prevent recurrent or secondary caries, improve mechanical properties, increase bond strength and for root canal disinfection procedures. Therefore, focus of this analysis is to discuss the current progress in the subject area of conservative dentistry with regards to the incorporation of AgNPs into dental biomaterials, emphasizing the advantages and applications in the field.
