Abstract: Background- The conceit of protracted shelf life of Asava-arishta needs appraisal following a well drafted stability protocol in current scenario. The objective of present study is to evaluate the out-turn of accelerated storage conditions on freshly fabricated Devdarvadyarishta (Sample I), one year old (Sample II) and six years old (Sample III) market samples of the same formulation along with prediction of shelf life at which 10% degradation will occur. Methods- Accelerated stability study as per ICH guideline QA1 (R2) was conducted for 6 months. Vicissitude in organoleptic and physico-chemical attributes viz. pH, specific gravity, viscosity, refractive index, alcohol content, surface tension, sedimentation rate was noted at five time points of 0, 15, 30, 90 and 180 days. The statistical analysis was done using mean ± SEM, student paired t- test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Results- Noticeable changes were observed in organoleptic as well as physico-chemical parameters. Extrapolated Shelf life of Sample I, II and III from physico-chemical parameters as per the climatic conditions prevailing in India came out to be 371.657 months (30.97 years), 251.09 months (20.92 years) and 85.98147 months (7.16 years) respectively. Conclusion- Asava-arishta possesses longer shelf life as they degrade at a slower pace and older preparations can also be used to attain desired therapeutic benefits if fresh ones are not available.
