Ethnopharmacology, Phytochemistry and Biological activities of Euphorbia hirta:A Review

Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: Euphorbia hirta belongs to genus Euphorbia and family Euphorbiaceae, The plant is commonly found in China,India ,Philippines ,Australia, Africa, and Malaysia. It has various traditional medicine applications including treating female disorders,respiratory ailments (cough,coryza, bronchitis, and asthma) worm infestations in children,dysentery ,jaundice, gonorrhea with the use of the plant and weed extract serious health issues like kidney and hepatic can be cured. It is reported to contain alkanes,triterpenes ,phytosterols ,tannins , polyphenols and flavonoids. Aim of review: This review aims to critically asses and summarize the updated information concerning the ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, and pharmacology of E hirtaas well as its toxicology and discuss the existing problem and future research direction of E hirta. Material and Methods: All the information and data was collected on Euphorbia hirta using keywords “ Euphorbia’’. Along with the “Phytoconstituents and “Pharmacology’’ “Traditional medicine” “Taxonomy” and pertinent data were obtained from several electronic scientific databases (Pubmed, SciFinder , Scopus, ACS publications and web of science ) and additional information was obtained from textbooks and local prints and scripts. They were read and systematically summarize and organize into many titles to facilitate understanding. Results: Phytochemical analysis has described important chemical constituents of E hirta including several active constituents have been isolated.Afzelin (i),quercetin(II) and myricetin (III) have been isolated from the methanolic extract .and chemical investigation led to the isolation of the rutin (IV) euphorbin -A,euphorbin - B,euphorbin- C and kaempferol,gallic acid,proto catechicacid.and with the key compounds with key pharmacological effects include Antibacterial activity,Anti malarial activity,Anti inflammatory activity .galactogen activity, anti-asthmatic activity, AntiOxidantactivity,Anti fertility,Anti amoebic and Antifungalactivity. Conclusion: The Widley spread of the various synthetic drugs to treat human health has several side effects besides their availability to the higher costs. Hence, examining natural available bioactive compounds is crucial. This review investigates and presents the relevant information on E hirta and its traditional use, as well as potential pharmacological properties There are many other traditional uses of E hirta in Ayurveda which serves as the basis for further studies
