Improving adolescent’s knowledge and attitudes regarding sleep through video education

Abstract: Background: Sleep is a basic need that is very important for physical and psychological development of adolescents. Knowledge and attitudes affected the sleep problem. Video education through WhatsApp increased knowledge and attitudes effectively. The objective of this study was to find out the effect of video education by using WhatsApp toward adolescents’ knowledge and attitude of sleep that having sleep problems Methods: Quasi Experimental with pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design was conducted on 82 adolescents with range of age were 12-15 years old that having sleep problems. Adolescents in the intervention group (n: 40) acquired education with videos and adolescents in the control group (n: 42) acquired education with leaflets. Education was provided through WhatsApp group for 2 days. Knowledge and Attitudes were measured by using questioners from the researcher. The data analysis used paired t test and independent t test with 95% interval. Results: There was a significant effect on the use of educational videos and leaflet toward knowledge and sleep attitudes (p <0.05). Based on the independent t test there were significant differences toward knowledge and attitudes about sleep in the two groups (p <0.05). Conclusions: Educating through WhatsApp by using video affected the increasing of knowledge and educating by using leaflet affected the increasing of sleep attitude toward adolescents that having sleep problems.
